RIPLEY, W.Va. (WV News) — Ripley City Council met for its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, July 5. Topics of discussion at included recent festivities updates as well as several oaths of office being taken.

Mayor Carolyn Rader announced that the Footloose Friday on June 24 was a great success. Approximately 60 people attended, and music ranged from be-bop to country line dancing and more.

“We were truly blessed,” Rader said. “The turnout was better than I could have imagined.”

Due to the overwhelming success of the event, council pledged $140 to provide a second Footloose Friday for the first weekend in August.

Five oaths of office were given by Mayor Rader.

The term renewals of Ashley Hosaflook, Charles Edward Smith IV and Jeremy Stover were approved for the Parks Advisory Committee, along with Rick Buckley and Doug Skeen for the City of Ripley Utility Board.

Department reports included Brian Arthur, Chief Water Operator, who said he had to replace air compressors at the water plant. He also reported that the water tank on Hilcrest has had several leaks, but it is on schedule for repairs.

Chief Sanitary Operator and Project Chairman, Matt Anderson advised bids were closed on July 5 for paving for several city streets. The only company to submit a bid was West Virginia Paving, Inc.

In other business an issue that arose during the Spring Cleanup was discussed by the council. Resident Nick Howery had filed a claim due to the accidental tow away of a mobile basketball unit. After consideration of the claim, council agreed to reimburse Howery $300 to cover the replacement cost.

A proposed Second Supplemental Resolution for a date change was approved by council.

A revision in the amount of $3,076 was approved to increase the Coal Severance budget.

The next Ripley City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 19 at 7 p.m. in the Ripley Municipal Building.
